"Primary Color"

An example of The Stroop Effect? A study in cognitive dissonance with a side of mixed messaging? Possibly. Or rather, is it a sociopolitical statement about racism in this churning melting pot we call the United States? Perhaps.

More simply, the idea behind this ironically titled image was to render the color described by each word with its direct opposite--or complementary--color, none of which are primary. I added the grid of dots behind the letters for visual depth.

Matte acrylic on canvas. Dimensions: 84" x 60" x 2.25". Date: 2006.

(I also have a t-shirt variation of this image available in the store.)

NOTE: I'm not especially interested in selling this original canvas, so I've intentionally set it as Sold Out. However, I do want it visible in the store as it provides thematic context for washlively.com images and merchandise (Most of the digital tableaux on washlively.com have a hand painted, large format canvas counterpart.)

That said, if you're seriously interested in this canvas, please contact me.

As with all of my OXXO work, this painting is made with very saturated, high-key, matte acrylic paint. There's absolutely no sheen on any of the colors, so there's no glare under intense light.

This is NOT a mockup. This is a physical canvas that I stretched and painted on a frame I built myself. There's been no Photoshop manipulation of the painting whatsoever other than to isolate it from the background and studio props, which have been desaturated and blurred for emphasis. The colors have not been enhanced and are as bright and solid as they appear in the photos.

Props are not for sale.
